Accelerating Africa’s Digital Transformation: Building Foundations for Inclusive Growth

Partner: UNDP

Big results

Big Blue partnered with the UNDP Africa Accelerator for Digital Public Infrastructure (AA4DPI) to translate complex policy work into a cohesive, impactful visual system. We delivered a comprehensive suite of communication assets, including a full policy report, executive summary, brochure, and presentation suite, that successfully launched the AA4DPI initiative. By developing a flexible, Canva-based brand system, we empowered the UNDP team to maintain consistent, high-quality messaging across all platforms, ensuring their narrative of “leapfrogging” development through technology resonated with decision-makers, stakeholders, and African citizens alike.

Story

Africa stands at a decisive digital moment. As countries seek to deliver services more efficiently and foster inclusive growth, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), the shared digital systems for identity, payments, and data exchange, has emerged as a developmental imperative. However, moving DPI from the margins to the center of the continent’s development strategy requires more than just technical precision; it requires a visual and narrative language that speaks to human impact.

UNDP identified the need for a distinctive visual identity for the AA4DPI program, one that could articulate complex topics like digital sovereignty, financial inclusion, and interoperable systems in a way that felt human-centric, positive, and forward-looking. Big Blue was brought on to bridge this gap, helping the UNDP team shift their communication from static policy documents to a dynamic, scalable ecosystem of visual assets.

Approach

Big Blue led the end-to-end design and delivery of the AA4DPI visual identity and communication toolkit. Our approach was rooted in “narrative-first” design, ensuring that people, not technology, remained the focal point of the visual story. We developed a distinct visual language featuring a dark blue and pink palette, refined with various shades to ensure legibility and flexibility across applications.

We translated dense policy research into accessible layouts, ensuring that concepts like “leapfrogging” were visually grounded in human-centric storytelling. A core component of our delivery was a robust Canva-based Brand Guide, which allowed the UNDP team to autonomously manage social media templates, video assets, and presentation slides. This system-level approach ensured that the AA4DPI team could maintain consistent branding and respond to emerging opportunities with agility, long after our primary engagement concluded.

Results

The collaboration successfully unified UNDP’s AA4DPI communications under a recognizable, professional, and adaptable brand system. We delivered a complete suite of materials, including a fully designed policy report, executive summary, brochure, roll-up banners, and an interactive PPT template, designed to support the program’s launch.

Beyond the deliverables, the project established a flexible design system that allows UNDP to easily adapt assets for diverse platforms. This ensures that the critical message of sovereign, inclusive digital foundations continues to reach African stakeholders effectively, demonstrating how creative design can elevate the conversation around complex social and economic policy.
